The problem
Salary alone makes offers in different cities hard to compare. Taxes, living expenses, and currency can change the practical value of an apparently larger offer.
Who it serves
People exploring relocation or comparing compensation across Canadian and US cities who want to see the assumptions behind a take-home estimate.
My contribution
I built the comparison model, scenario controls, and charts, bringing salary, estimated taxes, expenses, and exchange rates into one interactive view.
Product decisions
Compare up to three cities at once, normalize results to a chosen currency, and let users change the expense assumptions. Shared and city-specific salaries support both exploratory comparisons and concrete offers.
Making assumptions visible
Tax and expense data are dated snapshots rather than live feeds. The app exposes source notes, lifestyle presets, and category overrides so users can understand what drives a result and explore alternatives.
What shipped
Twelve city models, three lifestyle presets, income and expense comparisons, USD/CAD normalization, salary intersections, and equivalent-income guidance. Calculations run in the browser without an account.
Outcome
A working comparison tool with twelve cities, up to three simultaneous scenarios, editable expenses, currency normalization, and a tested calculation model. Results remain estimates based on dated assumptions.
